Artist Statement

My work is rooted in a love of history, nature, and visual beauty. Much of my current work is a series of contemporary representational drawings inspired by Native American photographs from the late 19th and early 20th centuries. I am drawn to these historic portraits for their beauty, character, and connection to the American West, a landscape I came to appreciate while living in Denver. Although the photographs provide the starting point, I approach each drawing as an interpretation rather than a simple reproduction, bringing my own style and attention to craftsmanship to the work.

I also work in oil, painting landscapes and still lifes with a particular interest in light, atmosphere, and the beauty of the natural world. Whether working from a historic photograph or from direct observation, my goal is to create carefully observed paintings and drawings that reward close attention. I hope the work conveys a sense of beauty and craftsmanship—sometimes quiet and serene, sometimes more dramatic. I studied Art and Design as an undergraduate before pursuing a different career, and returned to fine art years later as a serious creative pursuit. I am now based in Columbus, Ohio.
